Paul Bowles

The writer and composer Paul Bowles (1910 - 1999)

A photo taken by an unknown photographer some time in the 1960ies gave me the idea for the color portrait above, while the pencil sketch is based on a 1967 photo taken by Terence Spencer in Tangier.

Paul Bowles has been a major inspiration to me for many years, even before I paid him a visit in Tangier/Morocco in the year 1995. If you would like to read the short story of the meeting, click on the title link above the painting, or copy and paste this:

An excellent source of information about Paul Bowles, his life and work, and the people in his circle is the Authorized Paul Bowles Web Site, a labor of love by Paul's long-time neighbor and friend Kenneth Lisenbee. Copy and paste here:

Peruvian Women

This painting is an adaption of a photo I took of local women selling onions at the Pisac market. Pisac is a small town in the Sacred Mountains of Peru, a short distance from Cuzco.
